About Meydan
Meydan is a Dubai developer that started work in 2007 on a plan drawn up by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Its board was appointed by the Ruler's decree, with Saeed Humaid Al Tayer as chairman. In March 2024 the Ruler ordered that Meydan and Nakheel be brought under Dubai Holding, and the boards of both companies were abolished.
Its first project was Meydan Racecourse, which replaced Nad Al Sheba as Dubai's main racecourse. It was officially opened on Dubai World Cup day, 27 March 2010. The site has a 60,000-seat grandstand and The Meydan, a five-star hotel beside the track.
The build was not smooth. In January 2009 Meydan cancelled the grandstand contract with a joint venture of Arabtec and Malaysia's WCT, saying the builders had fallen behind schedule. The contractors started arbitration, and in 2012 Meydan filed a Dh3.5 billion suit against them in the Dubai courts.
Its land includes the Meydan area and parts of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City. Its best-known homes are in District One, a 50:50 venture with Sobha Group in Mohammed Bin Rashid City. District One is planned for about 1,500 villas around a lagoon about 7 km long.
